Sanja Matsuri & the Family

Traditional syndicates that demonstrate their involvement in community activities

Sanja Matsuri, is one of Tokyo’s most vibrant and popular festivals. It takes place annually on the third weekend of May at Asakusa Shrine in the Asakusa district. The festival honors the three founders of Senso-ji Temple.

The yakuza’s involvement in Sanja Matsuri has historical roots. Traditionally, yakuza members were deeply integrated into local communities and often played roles in organizing and supporting festivals. Their participation in Sanja Matsuri is part of this broader tradition.

During the festival, yakuza members are often conspicuously visible. They participate in the Mikoshi processions, sometimes displaying their elaborate tattoos, which are usually covered in public. This display is both a cultural expression and a demonstration of their involvement in community activities.

I focused mainly on the group related to the Sumiyoshi-kai trying to get the essence of their presence during the processions.

The organization managed by this cultural brotherhood meticulously addresses every aspect and necessity of the weekend events. They oversee food and drinks, maintain order during the crowded processions, and ensure the final cleaning of the area. By Sunday night, the venue will be cleaner than it was before the festivities began.

Taking pictures in this chaotic situation was sometimes hard but very satisfying in the end.
