A Celebration of Culture and Tradition
Yokohama Chinatown, nestled in the heart of Japan’s second-largest city, is a vibrant hub of cultural exchange and celebration. Every year, during the auspicious time of Chinese New Year, this neighborhood comes alive with a flurry of colors, sounds, and aromas, as locals and visitors alike gather to partake in the festivities.

One of the most striking features of CNY is the lively street decorations. The narrow alleys and bustling thoroughfares are adorned with red lanterns, symbolic of good fortune and prosperity. Elaborate displays featuring traditional Chinese characters and motifs add to the festive atmosphere, transporting visitors to the heart of China’s rich cultural heritage.
The sounds of drums and cymbals reverberate through the air as lion and dragon dance troupes weave their way through the crowded streets. These captivating performances, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring luck for the coming year, are a highlight of the celebrations. Spectators young and old line the sidewalks, eagerly awaiting the chance to catch a glimpse of the colorful creatures as they twist and turn in a mesmerizing display of agility and skill.

It wasn’t easy to take photos in this hectic environment of people, with staff who kept shouting not to stop. But here are some shots, along with the inevitable fireworks, with the Bay Bridge in the background.
