Kagurazaka Matsuri

The hottest matsuri in Tokyo

This is the biggest summer matsuri (festival) of the year in the trendy neighborhood of Kagurazaka.

The back streets of Kagurazaka come alive during the Kagurazaka Matsuri, a summer festival that revives the lively ambience of old Tokyo.

In and around Bishamonten Zenkokuji Temple, you’ll find a market selling hozuki (Japanese lantern plant). Additionally, to top off your summer evening, local cafes and restaurants set up stalls for this event. The festival highlight is the Awa-odori Dance, during which 18 groups of incredibly talented musicians and dancers form a procession to dance along Kagurazaka-dori Street.

After the sun sets, the parade of groups begins, one after the other, dragging you with their energy and their music
